Pretend you have to go live in another country.

What country would you go to and why?

You could only take five of your possessions along. What would you bring and why would you bring them?

What items would you leave behind and why?

We posed these questions to our 6th grade classes after they studied immigration and visited Ellis Island. We also posted the questions in the Project Registry at the GlobalSchool house. These are the responses we got. The participating students were from a variety of grade levels and from the following locations:

1. We would like to go to France because we're studying their culture, and learning their language. They have a lot of museums, and tourist attractions, such as the Eiffel Tower. Also, they have interesting foods and many little coffee shops, bakeries, and we would like to taste authentic French food.

2. We would bring lots of money, a translation dictionary, clothes, toiletries such as a razor to shave our legs and underarms, and a video camera. We would bring money because we would like to be able to buy souvenirs and to pay for our food, hotel expenses, and plane fare. We would bring a translation dictionary so we could translate what French people say that we couldn't understand or tell them things in French that we don't know the French words for. We would take clothes with us to France because we need to have clothes to wear. We would take certain toiletry items because we would need to shower and be clean and sanitary. Finally, we would bring a video camera so we could record our stay in France.

3. The items we would leave behind in Illinois would be a television set, siblings, and our make up. We would leave behind our television set because there usually isn't anything interesting on television. We would leave behind our siblings because they are annoying and obnoxious. We would leave behind our make up because the French are supposed to have really nice make up.

I am going to move to Norway. I will bring a picture of my Mom and Dad so that I can remember them when I am not in the U.S.A. any more. I am also going to bring a picture of my brother Jason so I'll never forget him because he was my favorite person in the whole world. I am also going to bring food so I don't starve and so I can eat snack.

I am going to live in Spain I will bring a pillow because I need something to put my head on and a blanket , I need something to keep me warm and a teddy bear to keep me company and clothes to change into a suitcase too and an empty suitcase too and some food too, so I can eat, drink . Also a game so I don't get bored.

I am going to live in France. I will bring a teddy bear with me because I love my teddy bear a lot it's my favorite teddy bear. I will bring my favorite pillow because it is nice and soft and comfy and I always sleep with it. I would bring a blanket it is my favorite blanket and it is soft.

I am going to live in China. I will bring my bunny because I had him since I was one year old and I would bring my pillow because the floor is hard. I would bring twenty five dollars because I would have buy drinks and I would bring food because I would have to eat. I would bring candy and I would bring a blanket because it is cold and it would keep me warm.

If I had to move to another country, I would go to Ireland because I have been there and it is fun.

I would take my video games because I don't want to buy more. Iwould bring my computer so I can play that. I would bring money to buy things. I would also bring clothes to wear. I would bring my camera to take pictures.

I would leave behind my desk, my phone, and what I don't need.

If I had to move to another country, I would choose Puerto Rico because I want to go to the beaches and see the towers.

I would take my walkman, and my a pair clothes, a towel, and my fold bed, and a bathing suit. I will bring all of this stuff because they are my favorites and also because I do not know if they have it there.

I would leave my foldup bed, my blanket and my disk. I would leave this stuff behind because it would be too heavy for my suitcase.

If I had to move to another country, I would choose France because I want to see all the neat and interesting things, and goods they use.

When I go to France I will bring a pair of binoculars, so I can look at the animals and other things, a sleeping bag to sleep in, clothes to wear, a stuffed animal to sleep with, and a notebook to write notes in.

I would leave my tape player behind because there is nowhere to play it, and my jewelry so that I don't lose it, and there is nowhere to put it.

If I had to move to another country I would choose France because I want to see interesting things. I would take my clothes to wear, my toys to play with, my camera to take pictures, my purse to go shopping, and my cd's to hear music. I would leave my pooh bear, my clothes that I don't like, my beanie babies, my glass dolls, and I would leave these because I don't want them to get dirty.

If I had to move to another country, I would pick South Africa because I can see tigers, lions, and cheetahs that are in their natural habitat.

The five possessions I would bring are my game boy, clothes, my radio, food, and my money. I would bring my money in case I need to buy something that I really need and I would bring my game boy just in case I get bored at all.

I would leave behind my Mom, Dad, and my brother because they would keep bothering me a lot.

If I had to move to another country, I would live in Jamaica because I miss my grandparents and it would be nice to live there.

I would take my walkman, clothes, water, candy, photos. I would clothes so I would have something to wear and something to drink, candy and a walkman. I would bring it to listen to and have something sweet to eat.

I wouldn't bring my bed, furniture. They are too heavy to carry around.

I would not bring my big radio, my toys that I like, my homework some of my drawings, and my posters.

If I had to move to another country, I would go to Tasmania so I can see lions. I would take some clothes so I can change, money so I can buy things, first aid so if I get hurt, water bottles so I can drink, a small t.v. so if I do not like lions I can watch t.v.

I would not take my big t.v. because it's too big, books because they're no fun, my bed because it's too big, homework because it's no fun, and my Science book because it is no fun.

I would like to go to England because I want to see Big Ben. I would bring my stuffed animal BunBun, my mom to be my companion, a lot of money for souvenirs, and my cat Tigerlily. I wouldn't bring too many clothes because I'm going to buy some new ones. I'd leave my cat, Francise in New Jersey because she's mean. I'd leave the rest of my family at home because it's a very expensive trip.

I would take a case of bottled water and a camera for taking pictures. I would bring my summer clothes because I need to wear them and I can't be hot. I would bring money because I may need to buy something. I would also bring 3 pairs of shoes just in case something happens to 1 of them.

I would leave behind my closet because I can't bring it. It is to big. I would not bring my room. I also won't bring heavy clothes. It would be to hot.

If I had to leave my country and move to another one, I would choose Italy because it is famous for spaghetti and pizza.

The possessions I would bring would be a picture of my family, toothbrush, toothpaste, and my dog.

I will leave behind my T.V. and stuff that isn't important because I do not need them when I am in Italy because they have them in Italy.

If I had to move to another country,I would go to Guyana, because I always wanted to live in Guyana. I already had an experience of living there because I went on vacation in Guyana.

I would bring first aid because I might get hurt. I would bring clothes to wear, and I would bring money to buy things. I would take paper and pencil to write letters. I'll also bring a map because I might get lost.

I won't bring a bed because it's too big. I won't need a desk. I won't bring a washing machine because I can hand wash clothes and I won't bring my brother because he's too annoying.

I would take my dog because she sleds there. I would bring my money so I could buy stuff. Then I would bring my clothes so I can wear them. Then I would bring my toys so I can play with them. I would bring my books so I can read.

I would leave nothing because everything is special to me and my family.

If I was an immigrant I would go to Japan because it seems like an interesting place to visit and it is pretty safe there because there is little crime.

1.A translation book.
2.Some money.
3.A car because I don't like those foreign cars.
4.Some of my own food because there food doesn't always look so appetizing.
5.Some of my own clothes.

If I was ever an immigrant, I would want to go to Sweden. I like the colder weather they have. Life is a lot more relaxed there than here in the United States. My relatives, who live in Sweden, often go on skiing trips and such.

Moving to Sweden would require me to bring warm clothes for the long winters. Ski equipment would be necessary to ski on the hills. I would need to bring a translator because I don't speak Swedish. I would need to bring money along, of course. I would also have to bring things that would remind me of America.

I wouldn't need to bring anything that wasn't necessary for the Swedish climate or their different culture.

For the questions, if I have to go live in another country, I'd like to go to the US, because it is called the "heaven" in the country I come from, which is Taiwan. In the US, people have their freedom to talk, to criticize, to start assembly and all these other stuff. Preparing to go to the new country, first of all,I would bring my family because they are my support; if I have to face any difficulties in the US, they would provide as much love and support for me as they could. Secondly, I'd bring all my money, because "no money, no life!" Next, I'd like to bring all my friends along with me because my friends are like the "second life" for me and being with them makes me feel comfortable. Fourthly, I would bring as more Taiwanese food as I can with me. Although I can eat American food as well, as for I'm a Taiwanese, I love to eat Taiwanese food the best. Last, I would like to bring the Taiwanese news if I could. Because, as an Taiwanese, I need to keep in touch with Taiwanese news constantly in order to know the developement in government and society in my home land.

If i was and immigrant I would like to live in Europe because I think Europe is a nice country and it would probably be a nice place to live and my friends tell me Europe is georgeous.

If I had to go to an other country I'd go to Italy. because my family came from there and I was told that it was a beautiful country. And I'd like to see all the buildings. I also like to go there so I could learn their language.

I would go to Venice, Italy. It would be fun to ride in gondolas instead of cars. It would also be fun to try many different foods. I would also like to learn a new language. It would be a big change but it would be fun.

If I could bring five possessions I would make sure that I cant live without them or I need them. I would start with clothing so I can stay warm or use it as protection for my body. I next would bring money so I can survive and buy a home and food. I would also bring a fresh supply of water in case of a water shortage or a drought. I would also bring my Bible, because even if I leave my homeland I will not leave my religion. I would also take a Italian translator so I can communicate.

I would leave behind not important things like my Nintendo. I would also leave behind my dog and give it to an animal shelter. I would leave all of my toys also because I don't need them. I will also leave the cloths that I don't need.

I am going to Israel because I am going to get a job in the country of my culture to raise my family. I would try to get a job in Jerusalem or Haifa because both are big cities with many jobs just like New York City. I would go sightseeing and have a little fun. I have to bring 5 treasured items, those items would be a blanket to keep me warm, photographs to remember my family and friends, clothing to keep me warm, my soccer equipment to play my favorite sport, and my legal papers to show to people so I can get into the country. Those items are really important to me.

I would have to leave behind my furniture because I can always sit on the floor if I don't have furniture. I would also leave behind my baseball cards all though I treasure them. It is very hard to decide what I will bring and what I will leave behind.

I would move to England because it is where the original Americans came from. Also I heard it is very clean, much cleaner than the U.S. The Buckingham Palace is there and I want to see Prince Charles. Also it is the original home of the Spice Girls.

If I could take 5 possessions I'd take money , clothes, laptop, cellular phone, and some hair necessities. I'd bring money because you can get almost anything with it and it is light. Clothes because I'd want to be well dressed. A laptop with a modem inside so I can send E-mail and cruise the web when I want to. A cellular phone so I could call my family and friends. Last I'd bring some Hair necessities because my hair gets messed up easily.

I'd leave behind my furniture because I'd stay in a hotel. My collections because I'd sell them to a museum. I'd donate my toys to charities so poor children could have them. All the rest of the things I'd sell it in a yard sale.

I would go to Japan because there are great inventors of video games and I like video games. The games would also probably be cheap since they have so many. I've never been to Japan before and I wonder what it is like being so far away from home. There are many places I could choose but I would like to go to Japan.

Three things that I would bring are: My Game Boy, a tiny TV, Pocket games, my bike, and a booklet on how to read Japanese. I would bring the Game Boy with Pokemon and pocket games to keep me occupied during the trip. The tiny TV is for watching TV. My bike for exercising and running errands and a booklet so I understand what people say.

I would leave behind my computer because it is to heavy. I would also leave behind every piece of furniture because that would also be too heavy. I would not bring my school clothes because I would be playing most of the time. If the voltage in Japan is different than America I would leave my NIntendo behind.

I would go to Ireland. I would go to Ireland because I have rich relatives in Ireland and a castle that belongs to my family. Another reason I would want to go there because I would like to see how Ireland and all its citizens operate during a normal day. One more reason is that Ireland is my background and of anywhere I would like to go there.

One of 5 items I would bring is my bike, because I might need to get places fast. Next I would bring my carry-along-cartoon studio where all of my drawings and other things are created. I would bring clothes with me because I can't wear the same thing over and over. Next I would bring my dog because I need to play with someone. And finally my attitude, because without it as a part of me, I'm nobody!(although it may change when I get to Ireland.)

Some things I would leave are ugly clothes because I'm not going to be called a dork.. Another thing is my computer because all my computer won't work in Ireland. One more thing is my books(although I would like to bring them.)

And that's what I would do if I had to move to a new country.

I would want to see what they wear. Another thing I would like to see is what food they eat. I would like to try it so I know if I like it.

If I could only take five of my possessions, I would bring my money, so I can by whatever I need. I would also bring my hair brush so my hair isn't messy. Another thing I would bring would be tooth paste and a toothbrush so my teeth wouldn't rot or my breathe wouldn't smell. I would bring photographs of my family, so I would always remember them. The last thing I would bring is my pillow. I would bring that because I can not go to sleep without it and it would always help me remember where I have lived.

The items I would leave behind would be food because it would probably get stale by the time I get to Italy. Another thing I would leave behind would be my cd player. I would leave it behind because it needs to be plugged in and there might not be an outlet available. I would not bring these things because they are not my favorite things; I could live without them!

I would bring a lot of money so we can buy food if we run out and buy other stuff that we need.

I would leave behind my television because I don't need to watch T.V. I would leave my radio because it is not important. I would also leave a cook book because I could learn how to cook on my own. I wouldn't bring too many clothes because I could always buy some there.

I would go to Autrailia because I like to take advantures and it sounds nice. My aunt went there before and she said that she loved it. I like animals and I heard there is a lot of great animals there. I`m sure it `ll be a great adventure.

I would take a blanket, food, shoes,clothes, and pictures of family. Why because I need those things to survive. Those things are something I would get good use out of. I, would need pictures of my family so I could remember all the good times we had together.

I would leave behind cooking tools because they would be very heavy and I wouldn`t want to carry them. I wouldn`t bring to many clothes. I wouldn`t bring a television because I don`t need to watch tv. I also wouldn`t bring my radio because listening to music is not my main priority.

If I had to go to another country I would go to Holland. I would go to Holland because I am part Dutch. From the pictures that I saw about Holland I would like to go there. I like it because of all the tulips.

If I could only bring 5 things they would be my money so I could buy stuff. I would bring my CDs player and CDs so I could listen to my music. I would bring my sega genesis and games that go along with it so I won't get bored. I would bring my pro football that says steelers on it because it's on of my favorite things.

I would not bring all of my other stuff like my sister because she is annoying. I do not like my sister because she always kicks me and then I get in trouble. I would not bring daises because Holland has a lot of tulips. If I did I would be shot and killed. I do not want be shot and killed.

I would go to go back to Rome, Italy because it is where my family lives. Italians make the absolute best food! I went there last summer, we got to make tomato sauce out of real tomatoes! We also got to make Italian pizza! We made 32 pizzas! The last thing we got to make was real pasta!!!

The five possessions that I would take are my clothes because if I didn't I would be naked. I would also bring my best friend Desi because if I didn't I would be very lonley.I would also bring my dog Tinker, because I would have someone to play with. I would also bring my Mom and my Dad because they would help me translate Italian to English so that I could understand what my aunts and my uncles are saying to me.

I would leave my stuffed animal because they are not important.

It's all ways summer and they have the best chiken and rice. You never have to worry about snow. All my family lives there so I would go there to seee them. And I also like there hotels.

I would leave my t.v. because they all ready have one. I would leave my food because they have lots of delicious food. I would leave my bike because I already have one up there. I wouldn't bring candy because my uncle own's his own candy, and food store.

I would want to go to Paris France because I would want to see how the French live and how different there lives are from mine in the United States. I would want to see the Ifel Tower, Arc Do Triumph, Versia. I would like to try there food and see how they celebrate their holidays.

The 5 possessions that I would bring are I would bring a radio because no matter where you are you need music. I would bring my pillow because it's my favorite and it's so fluffy. If I was an immigrant I would live in the USA because there are not many civil wars, there is a good government, they have got the best technology, there is beautiful scenery, there are beaches and they have an excellent military system because if another world war brakes out, the United States citizens are well protected. I would take my clothing to keep me warm and because everybody wares clothes. I would bring my passport because I can not cross the United States border with out it. I would also take my school books because when I start school my teacher will be able to look through my books and see how much I have learned and how much I still need to learn. I would take photo album so I can remember my family and friends. I can also remember what it was like living in South Africa. I would leave behind my pets because animals have to go by ship and it is very expensive, animals have to be in quarantine for about five months before they leave and five months when they leave. It would also be better for my pet because most pets die in quarantine. I would leave behind most of my toys because I hardly use them and it is very expensive to transport extra things over sees. I would not bring my car because cars are much cheaper in America. I would sell my car. Take the money with me and by a car there and I would still have money left over. I would leave behind my bed because a bed is very big and clumsy for transporting. I was really confused weather I should think like a child our like a grown up.
